A Revolution

What do you love about yourself?

Sharon Salzberg posted this the other day. (Or someone who runs her social media presence posted it. I appreciate it regardless.) Messages such as these are so rare that they sound radical and slightly revolutionary. I love both of those things.

Here’s something I love about myself: I listen well. I don’t necessarily mean that I listen well when people talk (although I do that well too), but I mean I notice the small sounds around me. And that gives my heart an internal squeeze, like maybe God is celebrating that with me.

I asked my older daughter to tell me one of the things she loves about herself yesterday. She said she loves that she’s good at making friends (She really is remarkably good at that). I was relieved it didn’t take her too long to come up with an answer, as she sits on the brink of an age with double digits.

My younger daughter, after giving me side-eye for the strange question, told me that she loves the gap in between her front teeth. I nobly refrained from standing up and cheering, but perhaps we can all take a moment to do so internally.

Welcome to the participatory portion of this blog. What do you love about yourself? Tell me in a comment, or just take a moment and tell yourself.

Bring on the revolution.
